How it works

Your website, translated for AI

AI assistants skim; they don't browse. llms.txt condenses your whole site into a clean, structured summary that models like ChatGPT and Claude can read in one pass.

Why AI search is the new front door

"Best dentist near me" is moving from the Google search bar to the ChatGPT prompt box. Here's what that means for you.

🤖

Patients are already asking AI

Millions of people now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI for recommendations, including who to trust with their teeth. AI answers name a handful of businesses. You want to be one of them.

🗺️

llms.txt is a menu for AI

Like robots.txt guides search crawlers, llms.txt guides AI models: who you are, what you offer, and which pages matter. It removes the guesswork so models describe you accurately and confidently.

📣

Cited or invisible

When AI can't read or understand your site, it recommends your competitor instead. Clear structure, open crawler access, and an llms.txt file make you the easy, safe answer to cite.

Placement Guides

Where to put your llms.txt

The file must load at yoursite.com/llms.txt: the root of your domain, right next to robots.txt. Pick your platform:

Option A: upload the file (recommended, uses this exact file)
  1. Log in to your hosting dashboard (Bluehost, SiteGround, GoDaddy, WP Engine, etc.) and open File Manager, or connect via FTP.
  2. Open your site's root folder, usually public_html (it's the folder that contains wp-config.php).
  3. Upload the llms.txt file we emailed you.
Option B: plugin
  1. Recent versions of Yoast SEO can auto-generate a basic llms.txt (Yoast → Settings → Site features). Ours is richer, so use Option A if you can.
✅ Verify: open yoursite.com/llms.txt in your browser. If you see your file, you're done.
Good news: Wix automatically publishes an llms.txt for every site, built from your site's SEO settings. You can't replace it with a custom file, so make Wix's version as strong as ours:
  1. Check what you have now: visit yoursite.com/llms.txt.
  2. In your Wix dashboard, go to Marketing & SEO → SEO → SEO Settings.
  3. Copy the page titles and descriptions from the file we emailed you into each page's SEO title and meta description. That's the data Wix feeds into its llms.txt.
✅ Verify: yoursite.com/llms.txt reflects your updated titles and descriptions (Wix refreshes it automatically).
Squarespace doesn't currently let you upload files to your domain root, so there's no native way to host llms.txt. Two honest options:
  1. Cloudflare (free) in front of your domain: if your DNS is on Cloudflare, create a Worker (or a Snippet/redirect rule) that responds to /llms.txt with your file's contents. About 10 minutes for someone comfortable with DNS, or a 1-line task for your web person.
  2. Maximize what Squarespace does support: apply the page descriptions from your file to each page's SEO description (Page Settings → SEO), keep AI crawlers enabled (Settings → Crawlers), and add an FAQ page. This covers most of the same ground.
✅ Verify (option 1): yoursite.com/llms.txt loads your file through Cloudflare.
  1. First, visit yourstore.com/llms.txt. Shopify has been rolling out auto-generated llms.txt files for stores. If one loads, you're covered; use our file's descriptions to sharpen your product and page SEO descriptions.
  2. If nothing loads, Shopify doesn't allow custom root files directly. Search the Shopify App Store for "llms.txt" and several apps will serve one for you.
  3. Alternative: if your DNS runs through Cloudflare, serve the file from the edge (same trick as Squarespace above).
✅ Verify: yourstore.com/llms.txt loads in your browser.
Webflow hosting doesn't support uploading root files like llms.txt yet.
  1. If your DNS is on Cloudflare, add a Worker or redirect rule that serves /llms.txt with your file's contents (10-minute setup).
  2. Either way: copy the per-page descriptions from your file into each page's SEO settings in the Webflow Designer. Clean meta descriptions are the next best AI signal.
✅ Verify: yoursite.com/llms.txt loads your file.
  1. Log in to your hosting account and open cPanel → File Manager (on GoDaddy: My Products → Web Hosting → Manage).
  2. Open the public_html folder (your web root, where robots.txt usually lives too).
  3. Click Upload and add the llms.txt file we emailed you.
Note: this is for GoDaddy web hosting. The GoDaddy Website Builder doesn't support root file uploads. Use the Cloudflare workaround or focus on the checklist below.
✅ Verify: yoursite.com/llms.txt loads in your browser.
  1. Drop llms.txt in the folder that serves your site root: public/ in Next.js/Vite/CRA, static/ in Hugo/SvelteKit, or the web root next to robots.txt on any server.
  2. Deploy. That's it.
✅ Verify: yoursite.com/llms.txt returns the file with a 200 status.

The AI visibility checklist

llms.txt is step one. These five moves compound it, and they're the same signals our AI Visibility Check scores you on.

1

Welcome AI crawlers in robots.txt

If GPTBot or ClaudeBot is blocked, AI literally cannot read your site and won't recommend it. Add the snippet on the right to your robots.txt.

2

Answer questions directly on your site

AI models love pages that ask and answer real questions ("How much do implants cost?"). An FAQ page written in plain language is prime citation material.

3

Add structured data (schema)

LocalBusiness or Dentist schema confirms your name, address, hours, and services in a machine-readable format AI trusts.

4

Keep your Google Business Profile hot

AI answers lean heavily on Maps data and reviews. Fresh photos, filled-out services, and a steady stream of recent reviews all feed the models.

5

Get mentioned elsewhere

AI recommends businesses it sees cited across the web: directories, local news, association pages. Every quality mention raises your odds of being the answer.

Paste at the bottom of your existing robots.txt. If you don't have one, this plus your sitemap line is a great start.

Questions, answered

It's a plain-text markdown file that lives at yoursite.com/llms.txt. It's a proposed web standard (llmstxt.org) that gives AI models a clean, structured summary of your site: who you are, what you offer, and which pages matter. Think of it as robots.txt's helpful sibling: robots.txt tells crawlers what they can't read; llms.txt tells AI what it should read.
No single file guarantees anything, and anyone who promises that is selling snake oil. llms.txt is one signal in a growing standard that makes your site easier for AI to read, summarize, and cite accurately. Combined with open crawler access, schema, reviews, and mentions (see the checklist above), it meaningfully raises your odds of being the answer.
Adoption is growing fast. The standard was proposed in late 2024 and has since been adopted by major developer platforms, documentation sites, and website builders (Wix now auto-generates one for every site). AI crawlers increasingly check for it, and it costs you nothing to be early, the same way early adopters of SEO basics won the last decade of Google.
The root of your domain, so it loads at yoursite.com/llms.txt, the same place robots.txt lives. A subfolder or a page named "llms" won't be found. See the placement guides above for your exact platform.
No. llms.txt is an additive file. It doesn't change your pages, your robots.txt, or how Google crawls you. It's read alongside your existing site. Worst case it's ignored; best case it becomes another channel recommending you.
Each generation crawls your site live and uses AI to write your summaries, which costs real compute. One per day keeps the tool free for everyone. Your site doesn't change daily, so neither should your llms.txt. Regenerate it when you add services or pages.
